Eye Makeup Etiquette

Eye Makeup EtiquetteMakeup is an amazing way to express yourself and enhance your natural beauty. Eye makeup helps to give your eyes definition. However, when using the same products day after day bacteria can accumulate quickly. If your eye health is important to you, the tips in this article can help you to protect your eyes and continue to enjoy makeup safely!

1. Throw Away Any Makeup That Is More Than Three Months Old

Like all product and ingredients, makeup products have a shelf life and an expiration date. You may not notice when it has become contaminated. However after the make up product has surpassed its shelf life, bacteria and fungus may begin to accumulate and become hazardous. Many eye doctors recommend that you throw away any eye makeup which has been used for three or more months. The risk of an eye infection increases significantly after three months.

2. Read the Label and Avoid Harmful Ingredients

Many makeup products often have hidden ingredients which can be hazardous to one’s health. For example, kohl is usually safe for use around the eyes, but becomes dangerous when lead is added to the formula. Some ingredients act as stabilizers and anti-caking agents. However, these ingredients can also be harmful to not only your eyes but to your skin as well. If you feel any irritation after using a certain product, do not continue use.

3. Exercise Caution When Applying Makeup Inside The Lash Line

Many people tend to apply eyeliner inside their lash line. This process is called ‘waterlining.’ Waterlining can allow bacteria to attack your eye freely. Waterlining blocks the oil glands which protect the cornea, leaving your eyes prone to infection.

4. Say No To Glitter

Glitter eye makeup may look great, but can pose seriou dangers to your eyes. Problems can arise if the glitter flakes off and enters your eyes. This may cause itching, irritation, and redness.

5. Always Remove Eye Makeup Before You Sleep

Sleeping with makeup residue on your eyes can cause irritation. Additionally, leaving mascara on for too long can cause your eyelashes to dry out and even fall off. Always use a makeup remover or cleanser to take off makeup and ensure that it has been completely removed before heading to bed.

6. Clean Your Eyeshadow Brushes

Dirty eyeshadow brushes can house a lot of bacteria. Clean your brushes regularly and avoid lending them to friends, as doing so can spread bacteria. Not only will washing your brushes ensure that your eye makeup will blend properly and look better, but most importantly, will keep harmful bacteria away from your eyes.
